Five Things I Love About Creighton …
Kathleen Marinelli of Medicine Lake, Minn., a biology major and Italian minor who will begin her senior year this fall, was named a scholar in the 2017 Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. The prestigious national award recognizes outstanding undergraduate students in mathematics, science and technology.

1. Challenged to be your best

“I love the fact that Creighton has really challenged me to be the best version of myself. It’s not just a motto – they really push you to be the best you can be. Creighton does a really good job of making you aware, and making you want to help others.”

2. For and with others

“Creighton recognizes that college is more than you getting to where you want to be – you should be helping those around you. I went on the ILAC [Institute for Latin American Concern] summer medical program. That was the best experience for me. I experienced true solidarity for and with others.”

3. Feeling of community

“When you walk down the campus mall or step into a classroom, you’re never worried about not knowing anyone. And when you step out of your comfort zone, like going on a Campus Ministry retreat or a SCSJ [Schlegel Center for Service and Justice] service trip, you can meet new people.”

4. Caring professors

“I have found that the professors are very dedicated to the student as a whole person. I got pretty sick last semester and my professors were super nice and flexible. It was pretty incredible. [Biochemistry Professor] Dr. Julie Soukup is a friend and a mentor; I can go to her with any question, not just those about research or academic goals.”

5. Skutt Student Center

“I tend to study in the library, but I like Skutt because I can walk in and see my friends and talk with them. And with the Starbucks, it has a fun atmosphere. It’s like going to a coffee shop without having to leave campus.”
