Katie Norris, the first graduate of a new program for early childhood education degrees, was featured on the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy County’s website as a success story. She is a first-year early childhood preschool teacher at Kellom Elementary in the Omaha Public Schools. The “A to B” Future Teacher Training program is in partnership with Creighton University, Educare, Metropolitan Community College and the Learning Community School Districts in Omaha.
Jean Hearn, EdD, director of elementary and early childhood education in Creighton’s Department of Education, explained the partnership with Metropolitan Community College in this program. “There is a need for more early childhood educators through the Department of Education in Nebraska, and this program is a great way to accomplish that goal,” Hearn said.
The “A to B” program allows students a more affordable path to a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Students like Norris, who received her associate’s degree from Metropolitan Community College, are able to transfer their credits for early childhood education to Creighton.
