Dean's Message - October 2018

Dear Arts and Sciences Alumni,

The start of the fall semester marks several important milestones for the University and our college. We welcomed the largest freshman class in Creighton’s history, with the quality of the new students surpassing their quantity. The academic profile of this year’s freshmen is impressive, with 43 percent graduating in the top 10 percent of their high school class. The students entering the college this year will enjoy the benefits of the generous gift from Dr. and Mrs. George and Susan Haddix last fall, and all our students will benefit from a newly renovated laboratory in the Rigge Science Building as well as numerous renovated departmental and classroom spaces. Additionally, returning sophomores will be the first class to participate in the innovative Haddix Ignatian Advising Program. This intentional program of study extends the firm foundation they received in their first-year RSP (Ratio Studiorum Program) seminar, and provides all students additional opportunities to enrich their understanding of Creighton’s Jesuit, Catholic mission and the value of Ignatian discernment in academic, personal and professional decision-making. What’s more, all sophomores will be able to experience an Ignatian retreat, led by our college Jesuits, and engage in programming designed to enrich their ability to connect their Creighton experience to meaningful careers.

We are also happy to welcome 13 new faculty this fall. While faculty were excited to welcome our students back to campus, they are also looking forward to participating in the University’s new Kingfisher Institute for the Liberal Arts and Professions. One of the pillars of the University’s strategic plan, the Kingfisher Institute aims to position Creighton as a leader in interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship, leveraging our unique configuration of undergraduate and graduate programs to demonstrate how liberal arts and professional education and research are complementary and mutually reinforcing. The institute aims to touch the life of every student by creating curriculum and programs that will distinguish their Creighton experience and align their education with a higher purpose. I invite you to learn more about the Kingfisher Institute and its inaugural programming here.

Please remember to keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. We are eager to share your story with other alumni and students. Please email us at casmarketing [at] creighton [dot] edu.

Warm regards,
