Dean's Message - November 2018

Dear Arts and Sciences Alumni,

Bridget M. Keegan, Ph.D.This fall semester has been one filled with many blessings for our college. We learned that we will be adding one more endowed chair to our ranks. Carol Zuegner, PhD, has been named as the inaugural Joella Cohen Chair of Journalism. Dr. Zuegner’s record of leadership and innovation is exemplified in particular by her work with the Backpack Journalism program. In October, we were thrilled to host the premiere of the program’s most recent documentary, The Displaced, about the plight of South Sudanese in Uganda, in a wonderful event that also featured Canon Explorer of Light and Pulitzer Prize-winning National Geographic photojournalist Stephanie Sinclair.

Our Fine and Performing Arts Department produced the premiere of a timely and thought-provoking play, Handled, by Shayne Kennedy, BA’94, also highlighted in this newsletter. The play explored the connection of mental health and social media for young people. Additionally, the Chamber Choir is looking forward to its first national tour, which will include a performance at Lincoln Center during the BIG EAST Tournament in March. If you would like to contribute, the department is crowdfunding to help defray the costs of the trip.

Over the fall break, I traveled with the senior Dean’s Fellows to the Dominican Republic for their capstone leadership immersion. Highlights of the trip included a visit to Dajabon, on the border of Haiti, to learn about the important work of the Jesuits in that region, including spending a morning visiting El Hogar de Cristo, a shelter for homeless boys. We toured the clinic at the ILAC Center as well as the clinic at a campo outside of Santiago, where we also learned about the community’s efforts in sustainability. All of us felt tremendous pride in Creighton’s longstanding partnerships in the DR, including the college’s Encuentro Dominicano semester-long program.

Finally, this fall I was able to visit with many of you in person during trips to Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis. Early in the new year, I’ll be traveling to Hawaii to meet with our many proud alumni from that great state. I love to hear from alumni and learn about all that they are doing with their Creighton education.

I wish all of you a blessed start to the season of Advent.

Gratefully,

Bridget M. Keegan, Ph.D.
