Dean's Message - May 2018
Dean's Message - May 2018

Dear Alumni and Friends,

After a productive spring term, our summer is off to a busy start. We said farewell to our outstanding class of 2018 at May commencement, and we are preparing to welcome nearly 700 new students to arts and sciences in August. Even before exam week was over, demolition began in the lab spaces slated to be remodeled thanks to the very generous gift from Dr. and Mrs. George Haddix. We’ll have beautiful, innovative new labs for physics (including astronomy and general physics), chemistry and biology, with additional renovations to Rigge occurring over the next several years. We will be excited to show off the new spaces during Reunion Weekend in September.

Also, thanks to the Haddix gift, we piloted our Sophomore Advising Experience. An intrepid group of 125 sophomores participated in additional career exploration activities and enjoyed an Ignatian discernment retreat led by several of the college’s full-time teaching Jesuits. Next year we will expand the program and offer these great opportunities to all sophomores.

We are thrilled to welcome the inaugural cohort of Haddix STEM scholars to campus. Under the leadership of Dr. Kayode Oshin, 13 students from Omaha South, Omaha Central and Omaha North high schools will be working side by side with our science faculty in their labs, contributing to original research and participating in programming that will provide academic and professional formation.

Next fall, under the aegis of the newly approved Kingfisher Institute for Liberal Arts and Professional Education, the college will lead a series of activities and events. First, we will host a campus-wide celebration of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. We will be theming the MAGIS core curriculum around problems and questions of racial inequality and launching a two-year long commemoration of the 1919 Omaha riots. Finally, in collaboration with the health sciences schools, we will offer lectures and workshops devoted to the intersections of health care and narrative. We look forward to sharing more details in the future!

Wishing you all a wonderful Memorial Day and a great start to the summer months!
