Dean’s Message – March 2018
Dean’s Message – March 2018

Now that we are in the season of Lent and with warmer weather marking the closing of the winter months, we are ready for new beginnings within the college and the world around us.

During spring break, I was blessed to be able to accompany our senior Dean’s Fellows on a capstone trip to Washington, DC. The Dean’s Fellows Program offers specialized Ignatian leadership development over four years, and the trip to our nation’s capital was a wonderful opportunity for these students to reflect on their journey as leaders and anticipate taking their talents out into the world. Highlights of the trip included a meeting with the Rev. Michael Sheeran, SJ, president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as with Nebraska senator Ben Sasse. Students also participated in a morning of service and visited key sites including the Museum of African American History and Culture and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

The college’s emphasis on holistic student development has been enhanced this year with the inauguration of our four-year comprehensive Haddix Ignatian Academic Advising Program, generously funded by George and Susan Haddix. A key initiative this spring has been our Haddix Ignatian Advising Program for Sophomores. The Reverend Joe Simmons, SJ, kicked off our program introduction as keynote in January. A main feature of the program is the opportunity for sophomores to participate in a specially designed Ignatian retreat this semester. I’m thrilled to embark on our advising initiatives to better equip our students to be the change agents of tomorrow.

Our outreach to local high schools is also advancing as we have begun reviewing applications for our Haddix STEM Corridor Program, which will select 13 top high school students from Omaha North, Omaha South and Omaha Central to conduct summer research work with accomplished STEM faculty.

We in the college are fortunate to have so many opportunities to fulfill Creighton’s mission of supporting students and their learning.

Have a wonderful and renewing Lent and Easter season.
