Grant Funding Received

  • McCormick Foundation Grant 2008 $500 for travel/conference expenses to attend the Associated Press Managing Editors NewsTrain workshop, St. Louis, Mo., March 6-8.
  • W. K. Kellogg Foundation Grant 2008 $200 for travel expenses to attend the Journalism That Matters: The New News Ecology conference in St. Petersburg, Fla., Feb. 1-4.
  • New Media Women Entrepreneurs Grant Competition 2007 Worked with student Jen Bischoff, adjunct faculty member Kathy Tewhill and staff member Angie Shields to develop Jen Bischoff’s idea into proposal for an online magazine aimed at young women that stressed achievement and accomplishment rather than makeup and clothes. We did not receive the $10,000 grant, (three were awarded out of 190 applicants) but it was a great learning experience.
  • Mentor for Sara Gentzler’s project, “Samuel’s Story,” a multimedia project featuring video, long-form story and other elements on the difficulties of child soldiers returning to village life in northern Uganda that she produced as a recipient of a Dean’s Summer Research Grant. Summer 2012 “Samuel’s Story” won the national Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence award in 2013 for online in-depth story.
